The best vegan Thanksgiving recipes

Are you looking for the best vegan Thanksgiving recipes to prepare this holiday season? We always are! It’s been a decade feasting on a plant based Thanksgiving meal and this year we’re sharing our favorites that we’ve enjoyed.

The best vegan Thanksgiving recipes for 2022.

From our vegan Thanksgiving stuffing in the air fryer to a vegan turkey recipe, vegan gluten-free Thanksgiving ideas and even vegan Thanksgiving desserts, this post shares all our top picks.

Vegan Thanksgiving Sides

What’s a plant based Thanksgiving without a myriad of delicious sides? TBH, they’re our favorite thing about the meal so of course these are our go-to recipes.

Vegan Thanksgiving Stuffing Recipes

Let’s start with vegan Thanksgiving stuffing. We’ve been messing around in the kitchen and even did a segment on Good Day Dallas with our recipe. It’s vegan stuffing in the air fryer and it’s so easy and quick to make.

If you want a more traditional stovetop stuffing recipe, we love the stuffing recipe from It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken.

Vegan Green Bean Casserole Recipe

Next, the vegan green bean casserole recipes. Creamy, crunchy and super cozy, the green bean casserole is a must when it comes to vegan Thanksgiving sides. Our favorite comes courtesy of Chef Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Post Punk Kitchen.

Vegan Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

We’ve tested a lot of the sweet potato casserole recipes and found the coconut milk many of them use makes it tastes less like what we grew up on. So, the vegan sweet potato casserole recipe we dig is the one from My Darling Vegan.

Vegan Mashed Potatoes Recipe

There are a million vegan mashed potato recipes on the internet. But, you don’t have to go far to find the best. And, that comes courtesy of The Minimalist Baker. These fluffy bad boys rock.

Vegan Brussels Sprouts Recipe

When it comes to sprouts, Chef Leslie Durso’s maple glazed ones are perfection. The way they crisp up and their flavor make this a must-make for the holiday.

Vegan Thanksgiving Main Dish

Vegan Holiday Roast Recipe

For the vegan Thanksgiving main dish, try Sweet Simple Vegan’s holiday roast. This seitan turkey comes with all the fixins.

Vegan Gluten Free Thanksgiving Recipe

However, if you’re gluten-free, a seitan roast isn’t going to cut it. So, check out Vegan Richa’s gluten free vegan roast instead. This one has got chickpeas and tofu as its base.

Vegan Thanksgiving Dessert Recipes

Easy Vegan Pumpkin Pie Recipe

We love a good pumpkin pie! Check out World of Vegan’s easy recipe for vegan pumpkin pie.

Vegan Pecan Pie Recipe

Finally, let’s talk vegan pecan pie. If you’re looking for a good vegan pecan pie recipe check out the one from The Conscious Plant Kitchen.

The wait is almost over. Slutty Vegan to open New York City location in September, 2022.

Slutty Vegan is opening in New York City September 17, 2022. The popular vegan restaurant that started in Atlanta in 2018 debuts in Brooklyn (690 Fulton St.) in less than a month. It’s the brand’s first franchise in NYC and the seventh location to open nationwide. It adds to the growing list of vegan restaurants in New York.

Vegan burgers, with a side of adult

The popular Black-owned plant-based burger brand is known for it’s adult-themed menu items. For example, there’s The Hollywood Hooker. It’s a vegan chopped Philly with jalapeños, bell peppers and caramelized onions. It comes topped with vegan provolone, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mayo and is served on a hoagie roll. Other eats include the Super Slut, an Impossible burger with guacamole, jalapeños, cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and Slut Sauce on a Hawaiian bun, plus hot dogs, chicken tenders and even New Orlean-style crispy shrimp.

Slutty Vegan set to open its first New York City location in Brooklyn Sept. 17, 2022. For more vegan dining news visit www.vegansbaby.com

Today, you can find Slutty Vegan at five locations in Georgia, plus a spot in Birmingham, Ala. Aside from the new Brooklyn location, Slutty Vegan is set to open one more spot in Georgia soon.

The restaurant was the first to receive Pepsi’s Black-owned business grant which gives $10 million to Black-owned businesses.

Pinky Cole making vegan mainstream

Pinky Cole is the founder of Slutty Vegan, which opens its first location in Brooklyn in Sept. 2022. For more vegan news visit www.vegansbaby.com

Founded by Aisha “Pinky” Cole, who opened her first restaurant – Pinky’s Jamaican & American Restaurant  – in Harlem in 2014, the restaurant includes investors like NYC’s Danny Meyer. The restaurant was a dream of Cole’s, who wanted to open “the conversation on vegan food options for people who have never considered them” in communities where there was high numbers of hypertension, obesity, cholesterol and more.

Since she garnered national attention for her long lines in Atlanta back in 2018, Cole’s career and Slutty Vegan have come medi darlings. Recently, she debuted a plant-based spinach dip at Costco stores, and even collaborated with shoe designer Steve Madden on Slutty Vegan shoes. In addition, Cole is DoorDash’s Chief Restaurant Advisor. Expect a cookbook from Cole to drop this fall.

Cole is also the founder of The Pinky Cole Foundation which “empowers generations of color to win in life, financially, and in the pursuit of their entrepreneurial dreams.”

Willow NYC is a vegan restaurant in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. If you’re looking for vegan comfort food in New York City, Willow NYC is a tasty option. It’s got veganized versions of favorites like sliders, crab cakes, calamari and more. Plus, their desserts are nothing short of sheer magic.

Brought to you by Chef Guy Vaknin, who is behind Beyond Sushi and Coletta as well, this is another winner.

With a whole vegan menu to choose from, it can get a bit overwhelming to figure out what to order. And, that’s why we’re here.

Now, we’re suckers for the apps on the menu here. You can’t go wrong with any of them. There’s calamari made from King oyster mushrooms (which we’ve had at Coletta). They’ve also got Zalmon Tartare, a nod to Beyond Sushi’s menu. In addition, there are cauliflower wings and jackfruit crab cakes.

But, we love these two apps the most.

1. Cheeseburger Sliders

Willow NYC is a vegan restaurant in New York City. These are five dishes to try at Willow. For more vegan dining in New York City visit www.vegansbaby.com

Set inside vegan brioche buns (seriously, where can you find these?!?), Willow’s sliders are Impossible meat with vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles. They come three a-pop, so if it’s two of you, good luck deciding who gets the third. Or, just slice it down the middle.

2. Truffle Mac and Cheese

Willow NYC is a vegan restaurant in New York City. These are five dishes to try at Willow. For more vegan dining in New York City visit www.vegansbaby.com

We always get the mac and cheese at restaurants … in the name of research. The truffle mac and cheese at Willow is one of the best we’ve ever had. It’s topped with goodness that includes vegan bacon, chives, smoked paprika, toasted panko and shaved truffles. The result is a creamy, flavor-packed dish that everyone (even non-vegans) will love.

3. Philly Cheesesteak

Willow NYC is a vegan restaurant in New York City. These are five dishes to try at Willow. For more vegan dining in New York City visit www.vegansbaby.com

It’s been a long while since we’ve had a Philly Cheesesteak and Willow reminds us of the goodness we’ve been missing. Vaknin fills a toasted sub with thinly sliced, savory seitan and then loads it up with grilled onions, oyster ‘shrooms, and a rich melted cheddar sauce. Get it with the thick steak fries. You’re welcome.

4. Buttermilk Fried Chick’n

Willow NYC is a vegan restaurant in New York City. These are five dishes to try at Willow. For more vegan dining in New York City visit www.vegansbaby.com

Like the vegan mac and cheese, we always try fried chick’n when it’s on the menu. This time, it’s buttermilk fried chick’n at Willow. The chick’n has a nice crunch to it and comes with cabbage slaw, horseradish aioli (a nice touch with a kick), avocado, romaine and pickles. Like the sliders, it’s served on a brioche bun.

5. Chocolate Chip Cookie Skillet

Willow NYC is a vegan restaurant in New York City. These are five dishes to try at Willow. For more vegan dining in New York City visit www.vegansbaby.com

PHOTO: Dara Pollak

Finally, Vaknin’s show-stopper you can find at his other restaurants makes it on to the menu here, too. The chocolate chip cookie slider is a must. It comes piping hot in a skillet with the chocolate chips still bubbling. It’s topped with chocolate ice cream, sea salt and roasted peanuts. Finally, there’s a nice smattering of peanut butter sauce to tie it all together. The result? Dessert perfection. We dare you not to finish it … even if you’re full.

If you want to feel good and eat good, check out Gaia Nomaya. The vegan-friendly restaurant in Prospect Park, Brooklyn is so much more than just a restaurant though.

Beyond the ethereal dining area laden with plants and crystals is an entire wellness center. It features a salt cave, yoga space complete with giant crystals, massage rooms and space for dancing and events.

@thedianaedelman This spot is magical #vegantravel #veganfoodie #newyorkvegan #foodietok #nycfood #prospectparknyc ♬ Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) – Kate Bush

Gaia Nomaya is thoughtful — its owners have pulled out all the stops to create a curated space for those who seek peace and want to improve their well-being.

At the helm of the culinary experience is Holistic Chef Dahiana Naiad, whose menu is impressive. She sources locally grown produce, or grows it on-site. Her focus is making her kitchen zero waste and sustainable. For example, after juicing apples, she takes the remainder and turns it into a jam for her housemade cheese plate.

A former nutrition specialist for the Red Cross, the vegan options at Gaia Nomaya are heavy on the earth’s bounty, plant-forward and made with intention.

New York City vegan-friendly restaurant: Gaia Nomaya

Vegan options at Gaia Nomaya

Most of the menu at Gaia Nomaya is vegan. And, it’s all gluten-free, oil-free, sugar-free and amazing.

Gaia Nomaya is a vegan-friendly restaurant in New York City with a wellness center. For more vegan dining in New York City visit www.vegansbaby.com

First, there are the vegan cheeses. Naiad has created a variety of plant-based cheese all made in-house. Our favorite was the port wine cheese served with walnuts.

Next, try the mushroom sandwich. Slowly marinated King Oyster mushrooms comes sandwiched between bread made with almonds. Also between the slices is a green pesto and almond goat cheese. It adds creaminess and extra flavor to the sandwich.

Another dish to try is the tostone trio. There’s a tostone topped with avocado crema. Another with almond goat cheese. And, our favorite, topped with Naiad’s grandmother’s pico de gallo.

Other options include a hearty steak and potato plate. A meaty portobello replaces steak. It comes with fingerling potatoes, rainbow carrots, and kale with a pesto sauce.

There’s also housemade ravioli that’s made with chickpeas.

Finally, for dessert try the tiramisu made with almond cake, coconut milk and cashews.

Or, opt for the less sweet cacao mousse. It’s made with Ecuadorian cacao with oats, almonds and dates and comes with a cookie for spreading.

Drinks at Gaia Nomaya

Not to be left out are the drinks at Gaia Nomaya. All alcohol served is 100 percent alcohol and ethanol-free. Cocktails feature fresh juices with healing properties, extracts made in-house and are clean.

There’s also a juice menu with concoctions designed to heal and nourish the body.

Are you looking for a vegan restaurant in the East Village that focuses on vegetable-forward dishes? If so, head to Avant Garden.

There are an abundance of vegan restaurants in the East Village of New York City, including Avant Garden. And,Overthrow Hospitality is largely responsible for it. Their portfolio includes the buzzed about Cadence, Soda Club, Etérea, Lady Bird and Avant Garden. But, it doesn’t stop there. The vegan restaurant group is set to open a few more concepts coming up, including an all raw restaurant.

@thedianaedelman The best way to get your veggies #veganfoodie #foodietok #veganrestaurant #nycfood #newyorkvegan #eastvillagefood ♬ You Think You’re a Man – Divine

Michelin Guide calls Avant Garden a “tight but artsy little jewel box of a restaurant” serving “well-polished vegan food” and they’re spot on.

The menu focuses on three different areas — cold, toasts and hot cuisine. Set up to share, the dishes here are all stunning and special.

5 dishes to try at Avant Garden

1. Baby Gem

Avant Garden is a vegan restaurant in New York City's East Village. Here are 5 dishes to try at Avant Garden. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com

Normally, we don’t throw salads on our must-try lists, but this salad is different. It’s their take on a Caesar and you’ve never had one quite like this. The salad features charred gem lettuce with roasted tomato, avocado and garlic nori croutons you’ll want more of.  It’s finished off with a sprinkle of vegan cheese.

2. Avocado

Avant Garden is a vegan restaurant in New York City's East Village. Here are 5 dishes to try at Avant Garden. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com

One of the best dishes on the menu, this isn’t any typical avocado. Served a top crispy rice, the avocado is smothered in a carrot ginger dressing and sprinkled with sesame seeds. The mingling of the carrot ginger dressing, miso-glazed crispy rice and creamy avocado make this one of our favorites. It comes with blistered shishito on the side.

Avant Garden is a vegan restaurant in New York City's East Village. Here are 5 dishes to try at Avant Garden. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com

Next, the artichoke toast. It’s as gorgeous as it is delicious. This dish starts with a creamy spread of artichoke and spinach puree and then is topped with pickled jicama, greens in a black truffle vinaigrette and crispy homemade chips.

4. Cremini Mushroom

Avant Garden is a vegan restaurant in New York City's East Village. Here are 5 dishes to try at Avant Garden. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com

Another toast, this one doesn’t look as gorgeous as the artichoke, but its flavor will leave you speechless. The toast combines cremini mushrooms and sliced grapes with small dollops of onion marmalade and a walnut puree. Sheer perfection.

5. Scorched Cauliflower

Avant Garden is a vegan restaurant in New York City's East Village. Here are 5 dishes to try at Avant Garden. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com

Finally, for a hot dish, they the scorched cauliflower. It features tender, scorched cauliflower on top of a bed of cauliflower puree with toasted garlic and fried capers.

Bonus: Lava Cake

Plan ahead for this beauty — it takes 45 minutes to bake. Decadent, rich and filled with gooey chocolate, this is the perfect ending to a meal. It comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to bring it all home.

Upscale vegan dining in New York City has a new addition thanks to the opening of Coletta. A part of the City Roots collection that includes Beyond Sushi and Willow, Chef Guy Vaknin’s newest endeavor celebrates fresh, fun Italian cuisine.

@thedianaedelman No one will know it’s vegan 🌱 #vegantravel #nycveganrestaurants #nycfoodie #nyctiktok #nycvegan ♬ Dancing in the Moonlight – Jubël

Located in Gramercy, Coletta’s menu is a hearty experience rich in flavor. A sexy dining room that starts with floor-to-ceiling windows and high tops before giving way to the bar and more seating makes the perfect date night restaurant.

New York City Vegan Restaurant: Coletta

Coletta serves everything from brick oven pizzas and pasta to innovate new dishes like the “Tuna” Crudo with “tuna” from Current Foods.

What to order at Coletta

“Tuna” Crudo

Coletta is a vegan Italian restaurant in New York City. Here's what to order at Coletta. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com/new-york-city

It looks like tuna. It has a very similar texture as tuna. And, it’s dressed with enough flavoring to actually make you think you’re eating tuna. Only, it’s definitely not tuna. Using Current Foods tuna, this crudo is a perfect light starter. It features the tuna along with pickled red onions and capers. It comes topped with a healthy drizzle of EVOO, cracked black pepper and seaweed caviar. Oregano flatbread accompanies the dish.

Puttanesca “Meatballs”

This appetizer steals the show. Vegan meatballs cooked in a lemon brown butter sauce come with melted mozzarella. It’s served in a sea of gorgeous puttanesca sauce with capers, kalamata olives and roma tomatoes. To make this dish even more perfect, there’s pillowy garlic knots.

Calamari

Coletta is a vegan Italian restaurant in New York City. Here's what to order at Coletta. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com/new-york-city

We’re always going to try vegan calamari if it’s on the menu. And, this calamari didn’t disappoint. It’s made with King Oyster ‘shrooms that are lightly breaded. A parsley lemon sauce and marinara come alongside it for dipping.

Fig Jam and “Prosciutto” Pizza

Coletta is a vegan Italian restaurant in New York City. Here's what to order at Coletta. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com/new-york-city

Next is the 12″ pizza. There are a handful of pizza offerings but this one stands out the most. The ‘za is topped with melty (it’s even got a little pull!) cheese with a housemade fig jam, fresh slices of Mission figs, crispy “prosciutto”, baby arugula, vegan parm and aged balsamic. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and savory on a pizza.

“Steak” Marsala

Coletta is a vegan Italian restaurant in New York City. Here's what to order at Coletta. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com/new-york-city

The star of the show is the “Steak” Marsala at Coletta. Smothered in a marsala suace is a seared seitan steak that’s divine. In fact, it’s one of the best seitan dishes we’ve ever had. Baked lemon potatoes and grilled asparagus spears come on the side.

Coletta Tiramisu

Coletta is a vegan Italian restaurant in New York City. Here's what to order at Coletta. For more vegan dining in New York City, visit www.vegansbaby.com/new-york-city

Finally, save room for dessert. Espresso liquor-infused ladyfingers with Madagascar vanilla cream make up this creamy goodness. Shaved dark chocolate and cocoa powder top it off.

New York City’s East Village is home to an abundance of vegan restaurants. Overthrow Hospitality deserves a lot of the credit for how vegan-friendly the neighborhood is. With a handful of restaurants, including Soda Club and the much buzzed about Cadence, the vegan hospitality group is firmly cementing its presence in the culinary scene. Etérea is another of their restaurants making a name for itself.

It’s entirely plant-based and entirely gluten-free, making it the perfect spot in New York City if you’re  gluten-free and vegan. Or just want want a vibrant, flavor-packed meal without all the processed eats.

Opened at the end of April 2021, the popular NYC vegan restaurant isn’t even a year old and it’s packing the house nightly. Led by Executive Chef Xila Caudillo, it serves plant-based, gluten-free small plates that honor her Mexican heritage and Southern California upbringing.

New York City Vegan Restaurant: Etérea

Etérea offers a menu loaded with choices, including craft cocktails with a focus on both mezcal and tequila. So, start your meal off with our pick, the Retox made with Reposado, jalapeño, maple, lemon and chili salt. If that’s not your vibe, it’s ok — their cocktail list is impressive. They even have a couple of cocktails that benefit charities, like Pocket Seeds made with Resposado, citrus, sunflower seed orgeat, curaçao and pimento. Money from that drink goes to the Ukranian National Women’s League of America.

But, let’s be real. You’re here for the feast, and that’s exactly what you’ll get. The menu is broken down into sections — bocados, platos, tacos and postres.

Bocados

Small plates, bocados range from broccoli coated in corn dog batter with chipotle aioli, salsa verde, pickled jalapeños and slaw. Be sure to dip it into the few dollops of mustard on the plate to give it a little extra kick.

We also love the tostados. They’re served two-a-plate and come topped with marinated tomato, fresh slices of perfect avocado and chipotle aioli. Crispy leeks top it all off.

In addition, other bocados include guac and ceviche made with mushrooms, avocado and mango.

Tacos

For those who want tacos, they’ve got two choices.

First, there’s the zucchini taco. It comes with fried, smoked cheese (so good!), along with BBQ sauce, cole slaw and pickled jalapeño.

Second is the aciento taco. It’s made with mushrooms and a nut and seed aciento and topped with mezcal habanero salsa, mango and spiced peanuts.

Platos

First, we’ve got to talk about the star of the show — Etérea’s nachos. We were warned they were huge, but it wasn’t until the massive came out did we fully comprehend the magnitude of the dish.

It’s a sea of fresh nachos covered with jackfruit, pickled jalapeños and onions and beans. It’s finished off with cheese sauce, crema, mezcal salsa and cilantro and adorned with edible, glitter-sprinkled flowers. It serves at least two people and makes the perfect starter.

However, our fave dish is the Corn Ribs Elote. This gorgeously photogenic dish featured corn on-the-cob that’s been sliced into “ribs” and covered in smoked paprika and cilantro aioli along with pickled red onion and crumbled cheese. The corn is oh-so tender and bursts with flavor. So, get your hands a little dirty and nibble on these.

There are a few other platos on the menu as well. They serve tamales with trumpet ‘shrooms and jackfruit, plus brussels sprouts, and cauliflower in a ranchero sauce with crispy black beans.

Dessert

Finally, there’s dessert if you’ve still got room. The hibiscus dulce de leche comes topped with a scoop of guava ice cream, fresh berries and a flower. Super photogenic. And delicious.

The chef-driven restaurant, helmed by Chef Guy Vaknin, originally opened its doors in 2012. Since then, it’s grown to offer numerous locations across Manhattan. Vaknin rose to fame the same year his restaurant opened, appearing as a contestant on FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen Season 10.

Focusing on a casual menu with veggie sushi at the heart of it, Beyond Sushi offers a bounty of gorgeous and flavorful dishes. They’re using fresh ingredients that are sustainable, as well as healthy.

So, what should you order at Beyond Sushi?

We’re so glad you asked.

5 dishes to order at Beyond Sushi

1. Shiitake Truffle Dumplings

No matter what, start your meal with Beyond Sushi’s shiitake truffle dumplings. These dumplings come stuffed with braised shiitake, baked tofu, spinach, porcini mushrooms and shiitake truffle. So rich and flavorful, they come topped with a spicy bean sauce.

2. Gua Bao

Another must-try item is the Gua Bao. These buns feature delicate braised seitan that melts-in-your mouth, along with fennel, star anise, ginger and agave. The soft bao buns are drizzled with a smoked pepper sauce, sliced chili, crushed peanuts and cilantro.

3. Spicy “Tuna” and Zalmon Tartare

Vaknin has almost perfectly re-created tuna in this vegan tuna tartare dish. Piled high on top of creamy avocado are chunks of tuna and zalmon with a toasted cayenne sauce and sprinkled with scallions. It comes with a side of warm taro root chips for dipping. Although, if you’re like us, you’ll just grab a fork and dig in.

4. Rainbow Roll

The Rainbow Roll is the show-stopper on the menu if you’re bringing non-vegan friends to feast. Vaknin’s rendition of the rainbow roll comes filled with gobo, cucumber, avocado, pickled red cabbage and dill, plus his tuna. A top the roll is thinly sliced avocado and zalmon that will make you do a double-take.

5. Ube Cashew Cheesecake

Finally, wrap up your meal with the ube cashew cheesecake. This light dessert can most definitely be shared … but you might not want to actually share it. The ube cheesecake comes on a ginger cookie crust — the perfect compliment to the gentle sweet of the ube. Then, it’s topped with hot fudge and ginger cookie streusel.
